48 Hours in Cape May

The Perfect Weekend Getaway

Cape May, NJ is the most charming coastal town that offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle from anyone's normal day-to-day life. With Victorian architecture, gorgeous beaches, and a culinary scene that rivals any big city, Cape May has something for everyone. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or just needing some R&R, this 48-hour itinerary will help you make the most of your time in this seaside gem.

Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Cape May

Breakfast: Start at one of Cape May's iconic breakfast spots. The Mad Batter is a local favorite, known for its fluffy pancakes (Oatmeal Blueberry pancakes are my fav) and vibrant atmosphere. If you prefer something more rustic, head to Blue Pig Tavern or venture out to Fish House in Cape May Point for a seafood twist on your morning meal with a view of the Delaware Bay.

Morning: After breakfast, head over to Cape May Point State Park. The historic lighthouse offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. Climb to the top for a panoramic vista that's worth every step. Once you've soaked in the sights, head over to Beach Plum Farm. This working farm offers a serene environment where you can stroll through gardens, visit the farm animals, and even grab a farm-fresh snack (considering you will have most definitely walked off your breakfast by now).

Afternoon: No trip to Cape May is complete without a visit to the Washington Street Mall. This charming pedestrian street is lined with boutique shops, galleries, and cafés. It's the perfect spot to pick up a unique souvenir or just enjoy some leisurely window shopping. When hunger strikes, Taco Caballito offers a stylish casual lunch with an upstairs porch that provides unbeatable views of the ocean and promenade.

Evening: After a day of exploring, head back to your accommodation to freshen up before dinner. For a sophisticated evening, start with pre-dinner cocktails at the Ebbitt Room, followed by a 5-star dining experience. The menu here is crafted with locally sourced ingredients, many from Beach Plum Farm, and the ambiance is both elegant and relaxing. If you prefer a more laid-back vibe, Mayer's Tavern is a hidden gem where you can enjoy a fantastic cocktail menu and a relaxed atmosphere by the docks.

Day 2: Relaxation and Local Finds

Breakfast: Begin your second day with breakfast at the Pier House at La Mer Beachfront Resort. The newly renovated covered terrace offers stunning ocean views and a tranquil start to your morning. After breakfast, take a leisurely walk through the mansion-lined streets on the East end of town. This quiet area is perfect for a peaceful morning stroll or jog.

Morning: Head back into town and visit the West End Garage. This eclectic marketplace features over 60 local vendors under one roof, offering everything from handmade jewelry to vintage clothing. It's a great spot to find one-of-a-kind items and support local artisans.

Afternoon: After shopping, take a short walk down Perry Street to Congress Hall. Enjoy an afternoon cocktail on the grand lawn, where you can soak in the historic charm of this beautiful hotel. For lunch, cross the bridge to Port, a Hamptons-style restaurant with a chic ambiance and fresh, coastal cuisine.

Evening: As your Cape May getaway draws to a close, indulge in a memorable dinner at the Washington Inn. This renowned restaurant offers a menu that never disappoints, featuring dishes that highlight the best of Cape May's local ingredients. The elegant setting and impeccable service make it the perfect spot to end your weekend on a high note.

Cape May offers a blend of relaxation, history, and culinary delights, making it an ideal destination for a quick escape. With just 48 hours, you'll leave feeling refreshed, inspired, and eager to return.
